Spar

A spar is a long, cylindrical, and robust pole made of wood or metal that is used on a sailing vessel to support sails and rigging. Spars are an essential component of a ship's rigging system, and they come in various sizes and shapes, depending on their location and function. The main spar on a sailing ship is the mast, which is the largest and most critical spar. The top of the mast is called the masthead, and it supports the ship's highest sails, such as the topsail and topgallant. Other spars include the boom, which is a horizontal spar that extends from the bottom of the mast and supports the foot of the mainsail, and the yard, which is a horizontal spar that supports the square sails on a square-rigged ship.
