Three Sheets To The Wind

Three Sheets To The Wind is a nautical term used to describe a ship that is out of control due to the wind catching the sails in an uncontrolled manner. This term is also used to describe a sailor who is heavily intoxicated and unable to control their actions. The term originates from the practice of tying ropes or sheets to the corners of sails to control them. If three of these ropes or sheets were loose or untied, the sail would flap around uncontrollably, causing the ship to lose its direction and stability. In modern times, the term is used to describe someone who is extremely drunk and unable to function properly.
