Trophic Level

In maritime context, trophic level refers to the position of an organism in a food chain. It is a measure of the organism's feeding status in an ecosystem. The trophic level of an organism is determined by the number of energy transfers it is away from the primary producers in the ecosystem. Primary producers, such as phytoplankton, are at the first trophic level, while herbivores that feed on them are at the second trophic level. Carnivores that feed on herbivores are at the third trophic level, and so on. The higher the trophic level, the fewer the number of organisms at that level. Trophic levels are important in understanding the flow of energy and nutrients in an ecosystem.
