Vessel Monitoring Systems

Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) are electronic systems that allow authorities to monitor the position, speed, and direction of fishing vessels in real-time. VMS typically use satellite or radio communications to transmit vessel data to a shore-based monitoring center. The system provides a way for authorities to enforce fishing regulations, monitor fishing activity, and prevent illegal fishing. VMS can also be used to improve safety at sea by providing vessel tracking and emergency response capabilities. VMS is mandatory for many commercial fishing vessels in order to ensure sustainable fishing practices and protect marine resources.
