Anchor
An anchor is a heavy metal device, usually shaped like a cross or a mushroom, that is dropped from a ship to the bottom of the sea to prevent the ship from drifting away due to wind or current. The anchor is attached to the ship by a chain or rope called the anchor cable. The anchor cable is wound around a device called a windlass, which is used to raise and lower the anchor. The holding power of an anchor depends on its weight, design, and the type of seabed it is dropped onto. Anchors are essential safety equipment for ships and are used in a variety of situations, such as when waiting for a berth, during maintenance, or in an emergency.
