Chain

In maritime context, a chain refers to a length of metal links that are used to anchor a vessel to the seabed. Chains are preferred over ropes or cables because they are stronger and more durable. The chain is attached to the anchor and then lowered to the seabed. The weight of the chain helps to keep the anchor in place and prevent the vessel from drifting. The length of chain required depends on the depth of the water and the size of the vessel. A typical ratio is 1:3, meaning that for every foot of water depth, three feet of chain are used. Chains are also used for other purposes on board a vessel, such as securing cargo or equipment.
