Athwartships

Athwartships refers to the direction perpendicular to the centerline of a ship. It is used to describe the location or movement of objects or structures on a ship that are oriented perpendicular to the centerline. For example, a bulkhead that runs athwartships divides the ship from port to starboard. Similarly, a hatch that opens athwartships opens across the width of the ship. Understanding the athwartships direction is important for navigation, ship design, and cargo stowage. It is also used in communication between crew members and in shipbuilding terminology.
