Automatic Identification System (AIS)
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a tracking system used in navigation primarily for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby vessels, AIS base stations, and satellites. When satellites are used this is called Satellite-AIS (S-AIS). The system was originally developed to help vessels avoid collisions, but it can also be used for vessel traffic services. AIS information supplements marine radar, which continues to be the primary method of collision avoidance for water transport. It transmits information such as vessel's identity, type, position, course, speed, navigational status and other safety-related information. It can be received by AIS transponders installed on other vessels, and by AIS receivers at coastal stations. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires all vessels over 300 gross tonnage, and all passenger ships regardless of size, to carry an AIS transponder.
