AIS

Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automated tracking system that uses transponders on ships and is used by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels. AIS transponders broadcast a ship's position, course, speed, and other information such as vessel identity, dimensions, and voyage details. This information can be received by other ships, VTS stations, and satellite-based receivers. AIS is an important tool for collision avoidance, search and rescue operations, and maritime domain awareness.
