Avast

Avast is a nautical term used as a command to stop or cease. It is often used to order the crew to stop hauling a line or to bring a ship to a stop. The term is derived from the Dutch phrase 'hou'vast', which means 'hold fast'. In addition to its use as a command, 'avast' can also be used as an exclamation to get someone's attention or to express surprise. It is commonly used in pirate movies and literature, but is still used in modern maritime contexts.
