Ballast Water Management

Ballast water management refers to the process of controlling, monitoring, and managing the ballast water carried by ships to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species and other harmful organisms from one region to another. Ballast water is taken on board by ships to maintain stability and balance, and is discharged when cargo is loaded or unloaded. However, this water can contain a variety of organisms, including bacteria, microbes, small invertebrates, eggs, and larvae of various species, which can be harmful to the marine environment and human health. Ballast water management involves various treatment methods, such as filtration, chemical treatment, and ultraviolet irradiation, to remove or kill these organisms before discharge.
