Battlecruiser

A battlecruiser is a type of capital ship that originated in the first decade of the 20th century. They were similar in size, armament and cost to battleships, but they sacrificed armor protection for greater speed. The idea of the battlecruiser was to outrun any ship with guns large enough to damage it, while having equal or superior firepower. Battlecruisers were designed to operate as fleet scouts and to engage enemy cruisers and destroyers, but they were also expected to be able to engage battleships in fleet actions. The battlecruiser concept became obsolete after World War I, as improvements in armor protection made them vulnerable to battleship-caliber guns.
