Binnacle

A binnacle is a waist-high case or stand on the deck of a ship, generally mounted in front of the helm, that houses the ship's compass. It is designed to protect the compass from the elements and to provide a clear view of the compass card from the helm. The binnacle may also contain a light to illuminate the compass at night or in low light conditions. The term binnacle is also used to refer to the compass itself. Binnacles can be made of various materials, including wood, brass, or iron, and can be highly decorated or plain in design.
