Scuttle Butt
Scuttle Butt is a nautical term used to describe a cask or a butt of water on board a ship. It is also used to refer to the drinking fountain or water cooler on board a ship. In modern times, Scuttle Butt has come to mean gossip or rumors circulating among the crew of a ship. This term is derived from the naval practice of providing fresh drinking water to sailors by means of a cask or butt, which had a hole or scuttle cut into it for access. Sailors would gather around the scuttle butt to drink and exchange news and gossip.
