Biofilms

Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that attach to surfaces and form a protective matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). In the maritime context, biofilms can form on the hulls of ships, offshore structures, and other submerged surfaces. These biofilms can cause a variety of problems, including increased drag on the hull, corrosion, and the spread of invasive species. Biofilms can also impact the performance of underwater sensors and other equipment. Understanding the formation and behavior of biofilms is important for developing effective strategies to prevent their formation and mitigate their effects.
