Bounding Bar

A bounding bar is a sandbar or shoal that is located offshore and parallel to the coastline. It is formed by the deposition of sediment by longshore drift and wave action. Bounding bars can be found in areas where there is a significant difference in wave energy between the open ocean and the coast, causing sediment to accumulate. These bars can be a hazard to navigation, as they can cause waves to break and create dangerous conditions for ships. They can also protect the coastline from erosion by absorbing wave energy before it reaches the shore. Bounding bars can shift and change shape over time due to changes in wave patterns and sediment supply.
