Bulk Cargoes

Bulk Cargoes refer to unpackaged, homogeneous cargo that is loaded directly into the cargo holds of a ship, without any intermediate form of containment. These cargoes are typically dry, such as coal, grain, iron ore, and cement, and are transported in large quantities. The handling and transportation of bulk cargoes require specialized equipment and procedures to ensure the safety of the crew, the ship, and the cargo. Improper handling of bulk cargoes can lead to shifting, liquefaction, or spontaneous combustion, which can cause the ship to capsize or sink. Therefore, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has developed the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, which provides guidelines for the safe carriage and handling of bulk cargoes.
