BWAD

BWAD stands for Ballast Water After Discharge. It refers to the discharge of ballast water from a vessel after it has completed its voyage. Ballast water is taken on board by ships to maintain stability and balance. However, this water may contain various organisms, including bacteria, microbes, small invertebrates, eggs, and larvae of various species. When this ballast water is discharged into a new environment, it can introduce non-native species, which can have a significant impact on the local ecosystem, including human health, fisheries, and the economy. Therefore, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has developed the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) to regulate the discharge of ballast water and reduce the risk of introducing invasive species.
