Ballast Water Management Convention

The Ballast Water Management Convention is an international treaty adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2004 to prevent the spread of harmful aquatic organisms from one region to another through the discharge of ballast water. The convention requires ships to manage their ballast water to remove, render harmless, or avoid the uptake or discharge of aquatic organisms and pathogens. It sets standards for ballast water exchange and treatment, and requires ships to carry a ballast water management plan and an International Ballast Water Management Certificate. The convention entered into force in 2017 and applies to all ships engaged in international trade.
