Cable-length

Cable-length is a unit of measurement used in maritime navigation to determine the depth of water. It is defined as the distance between two consecutive marks on a cable that is paid out from a ship. The marks are usually made at regular intervals of 47 feet and are used to measure the depth of the water. The cable-length is important in determining the safe depth for a ship to navigate, especially in shallow waters. It is also used in determining the length of an anchor chain needed to safely anchor a ship. In modern times, cable-length is often replaced by electronic depth sounders, but it remains an important concept in maritime navigation.
