Caulk

Caulk is a process of sealing the gaps between planks and around fittings on a ship's wooden deck or hull to prevent water from entering the vessel. This is done by filling the gaps with a flexible material such as oakum, which is then covered with a waterproof sealant such as pitch or tar. Caulking is an important maintenance task for wooden ships, as it helps to prevent leaks and maintain the structural integrity of the vessel. It is also used in modern shipbuilding to seal joints and seams in metal and composite hulls.
