Caulking

Caulking is the process of sealing the joints or seams in a vessel's wooden hull or deck to make it watertight. This is done by driving a flexible material, such as oakum (hemp fiber soaked in pine tar), into the seams between planks or decking boards. The caulking material is then covered with a waterproof sealant, such as pitch or tar. Caulking is an important part of shipbuilding and maintenance, as it prevents water from entering the vessel and causing damage or sinking. It also helps to maintain the structural integrity of the vessel by preventing the planks or boards from shifting or becoming loose over time.
