Companionway

A companionway is a staircase or ladder that leads from one deck to another on a ship. It is typically located in the center of the ship and provides access to the cabins and other living quarters below deck. The companionway is an important feature of a ship as it allows for easy movement between decks and provides a means of escape in case of an emergency. The design of the companionway is important for safety reasons, as it must be wide enough to allow for easy passage of people and equipment, and must be well-lit and ventilated. In addition, the steps must be non-slip and the handrails must be sturdy and secure.
