Defibrillation
Defibrillation is a medical procedure that involves delivering an electric shock to the heart in order to restore its normal rhythm. In the maritime context, defibrillation is an essential part of the emergency medical response plan on board ships. Defibrillators are required to be carried on board all passenger ships and cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and above. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established guidelines for the installation, maintenance, and use of defibrillators on board ships. In case of a cardiac arrest, immediate defibrillation can significantly increase the chances of survival.
