Defibrillators

Defibrillators are medical devices used to deliver an electric shock to the heart in order to stop an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and restore a normal rhythm. In the maritime context, defibrillators are an essential piece of equipment on board ships as sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death at sea. Defibrillators can be either automated external defibrillators (AEDs) or manual defibrillators, and they require proper training and maintenance to ensure they are ready for use in an emergency. AEDs are designed to be used by non-medical personnel and provide voice prompts to guide the user through the process. Manual defibrillators require a trained medical professional to operate and allow for more precise control over the amount of electricity delivered to the heart.
