Electrochemical Cells
Electrochemical cells are devices that convert chemical energy into electrical energy or vice versa through redox reactions. In maritime context, electrochemical cells are commonly used in batteries to power various equipment and systems on board ships, such as navigation lights, communication devices, and emergency power supplies. They are also used in corrosion protection systems to prevent the deterioration of metal structures in marine environments. Electrochemical cells consist of two electrodes, an anode and a cathode, that are connected by an electrolyte. When a load is connected to the electrodes, electrons flow from the anode to the cathode, generating an electrical current. In rechargeable cells, the direction of the current can be reversed by applying an external voltage, allowing the cell to be recharged.
