Estuaries

Estuaries are semi-enclosed coastal bodies of water that have a free connection with the open sea and within which seawater is measurably diluted with freshwater derived from land drainage. They are typically characterized by fluctuating salinity levels due to the mixing of freshwater and saltwater. Estuaries are important habitats for a variety of marine and terrestrial species, including fish, birds, and mammals. They also serve as nursery grounds for many commercially important fish species. Estuaries are also important for human activities such as shipping, fishing, and recreation.
