Even Keel

Even Keel refers to a state of balance and stability of a vessel in water, where the ship's center of gravity is aligned with the center of buoyancy. In this state, the ship is neither listing nor trimming and is floating horizontally on the water surface. Maintaining an even keel is essential for the safety and stability of the vessel, especially during rough weather conditions. The ship's ballast tanks are used to adjust the weight distribution and maintain an even keel. Any imbalance in the weight distribution can cause the ship to capsize or lose stability, leading to a potential disaster.
