Ballast Tanks

Ballast tanks are compartments within a vessel that are used to control the stability and draft of the ship. These tanks are filled with water to increase the weight and lower the center of gravity of the ship, which helps to prevent capsizing and improve maneuverability. Ballast tanks are also used to adjust the trim of the ship, ensuring that it is level in the water. The water in the ballast tanks can be pumped in or out as needed, allowing the ship to adjust its weight distribution depending on the cargo it is carrying or the conditions of the sea. However, ballast water can also introduce invasive species and pollutants into new environments, which is a growing concern in the maritime industry.
