Flag

A piece of cloth or similar material, typically oblong or square, attachable by one edge to a pole or rope and used as the symbol or emblem of a country, institution, or organization. In maritime context, flags are used to communicate important information between ships, such as a ship's nationality, its status (whether it is in distress or not), and its intentions (whether it is requesting permission to enter a port or is preparing to leave). The International Code of Signals is a standardized system of flags, alphabetic characters, and other symbols used for communication between vessels.
