Distress

Distress is a state of danger or potential danger to a vessel, its crew, or passengers. It is a situation where immediate assistance is required to prevent loss of life, injury, or damage to the environment. Distress signals are used to indicate that a vessel is in distress and requires immediate assistance. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established a set of signals, such as firing a gun, sounding a siren, or using flares, to indicate distress. When a vessel receives a distress signal, it is required to render assistance to the vessel in distress, if possible, and to report the situation to the nearest rescue coordination center.
