Global Maritime Distress And Safety System
Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an internationally recognized set of procedures, equipment, and communication protocols designed to increase safety and improve emergency communications in the maritime industry. The system requires ships to carry various types of communication equipment, such as VHF radios, satellite phones, and emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), and to be able to communicate with shore-based rescue and coordination centers. The GMDSS also includes a system of automated distress alerts, which can be triggered by a ship in distress or by a shore-based authority. The system is mandatory for all passenger ships and cargo ships over 300 gross tons on international voyages.
