GMDSS

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an internationally recognized set of procedures, equipment, and communication protocols designed to increase safety and improve emergency communications in the maritime industry. GMDSS requires ships to carry various types of communication equipment, such as satellite and radio systems, and to follow specific procedures for distress alerts, search and rescue operations, and other emergency situations. The system also includes shore-based communication facilities and rescue coordination centers to assist in emergency response. GMDSS is mandatory for all commercial vessels over 300 gross tons and all passenger vessels, and is intended to provide a standardized and reliable means of communication in emergency situations.
