Grains

In maritime context, grains refer to the measurement of bulk cargoes such as wheat, corn, and soybeans. It is a unit of volume that represents the cubic footage of a cargo when it is loaded in a ship's hold. The measurement is important for determining the amount of cargo that can be loaded onto a vessel, as well as for calculating freight rates. The grain measurement system is based on the amount of space occupied by a bushel of wheat, which is equivalent to 1.244 cubic feet. Therefore, a vessel's grain capacity is calculated by multiplying the number of cubic feet in its hold by the number of bushels of wheat that can be accommodated in one cubic foot of space.
