Hang From The Yards
Hang from the yards is a naval punishment where a person is tied to a rope and hoisted up to the yardarm of a ship's mast. The person is then left hanging from the yardarm for a period of time as a form of punishment. This punishment was commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries in the British Royal Navy and was usually given for minor offenses such as drunkenness or insubordination. The punishment was not only physically painful but also humiliating as the person was left hanging in full view of the rest of the crew. The practice of hanging from the yards was eventually abolished in the mid-19th century.
