Tumble Home

Tumble home is the degree to which the topsides of a vessel slope inward towards the upper deck or gunwale. It is the opposite of flare, which is the outward slope of a vessel's topsides. Tumble home is an important design consideration for ships as it affects the stability and seaworthiness of the vessel. A vessel with too much tumble home may be unstable and prone to capsizing, while a vessel with too little tumble home may be less maneuverable and more susceptible to damage from waves. Tumble home is typically more pronounced in vessels with a narrow beam, such as sailboats and canoes.
