Harpings

Harpings are the horizontal timbers that connect the lower ends of the ship's ribs to the keel. They are an essential part of the ship's structure, providing support and stability to the hull. Harpings are typically made of strong, durable wood such as oak or teak, and are carefully fitted and fastened to the ribs and keel. In addition to their structural role, harpings also help to distribute the weight of the ship evenly across the keel, which is important for maintaining stability and preventing damage to the hull. Without harpings, a ship's ribs would be unable to support the weight of the hull and the ship would be at risk of collapsing.
