Hydrodynamic Drag

Hydrodynamic drag is the force that opposes the motion of an object through water. It is caused by the friction and pressure differences between the water and the surface of the object. In maritime context, hydrodynamic drag is an important factor that affects the speed and fuel efficiency of ships. The shape and size of the hull, as well as the roughness of the surface, can significantly impact the amount of drag experienced by a vessel. To reduce hydrodynamic drag, ship designers use various techniques such as streamlining the hull, adding bulbous bows, and applying special coatings to the hull. Hydrodynamic drag is also a key consideration in the design of propellers and other propulsion systems.
