Propulsion
Propulsion refers to the mechanism that generates force to move a vessel through water. In the maritime context, propulsion systems are used to power ships, boats, and submarines. The most common types of propulsion systems include diesel engines, gas turbines, steam turbines, and electric motors. Propulsion systems can be further classified into two categories: mechanical propulsion and non-mechanical propulsion. Mechanical propulsion systems use a propeller or water jet to generate thrust, while non-mechanical propulsion systems, such as sail power or hydrofoils, use the force of wind or water to move the vessel. The efficiency and reliability of a propulsion system are critical to the performance and safety of a vessel.
