International Convention

An International Convention is a formal agreement between two or more countries that establishes legally binding obligations and rights. In the maritime context, International Conventions are agreements that set standards and regulations for the safety, security, and environmental protection of ships and their crews. These conventions are developed and adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. The IMO has developed a number of important conventions, including the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), and the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
