ITCZ

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is a belt of low pressure which circles the Earth generally near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. It is characterized by convective activity which generates often vigorous thunderstorms over large areas. The ITCZ shifts northward in the Northern Hemisphere summer and southward in the Northern Hemisphere winter. It is an important weather feature for maritime activities as it can cause heavy rainfall, squalls, and thunderstorms, which can be hazardous for ships and other vessels navigating in the area.
