Equator

The equator is an imaginary line that circles the Earth, equidistant from the North and South Poles. It is the line of latitude that is 0 degrees and divides the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. In maritime context, the equator is an important reference point for navigation and weather patterns. The area around the equator is known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where the trade winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet, resulting in calm winds and unpredictable weather conditions. Crossing the equator is also a significant event for sailors, marked by various ceremonies and traditions.
