Jettison

Jettison is the act of throwing goods overboard from a ship or aircraft to lighten the load in order to prevent sinking or to maintain stability. In maritime context, jettison is a necessary measure taken in emergency situations such as when a ship is in danger of sinking due to excess weight or when the cargo is damaged and poses a threat to the safety of the crew and the vessel. Jettisoned goods are usually those that are least valuable or essential to the ship's operation. The decision to jettison cargo is a difficult one, as it can result in financial loss and environmental damage.
