Jolly Roger
Jolly Roger is the traditional name for the flags flown by pirate ships when they are about to attack. The most commonly recognized Jolly Roger today is the skull and crossbones, which was originally used by pirates in the 1700s. The purpose of the Jolly Roger was to strike fear into the hearts of the pirates' victims, who would often surrender without a fight when they saw the flag. The Jolly Roger was also used as a way for pirates to identify themselves to other ships, as well as to intimidate and threaten their enemies. Today, the Jolly Roger is still used as a symbol of piracy and is often seen in popular culture.
