Jurisdictional Rights
Jurisdictional rights refer to the legal authority of a state or nation to exercise control over a particular area or territory, including the waters surrounding it. In the maritime context, jurisdictional rights are often related to the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and the continental shelf, which are areas of the ocean where a coastal state has special rights to explore and exploit natural resources, such as fish, oil, and gas. These rights are established by international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and are enforced by the coastal state's navy or coast guard. Jurisdictional rights also include the power to regulate shipping and navigation within a state's territorial waters, as well as the ability to enforce laws and prosecute crimes committed on board vessels flying the state's flag.
