Line-of-sight
In the maritime context, line-of-sight refers to the direct, unobstructed view between two points across the sea. It is a crucial concept in navigation and communication systems on ships. The line-of-sight is used to determine the visible horizon and the range of visual, radar, and radio communications. For instance, the height of the ship's bridge or the radar mast can extend the line-of-sight, allowing the ship to detect other vessels, obstacles, or land features at a greater distance. However, the Earth's curvature limits the line-of-sight. This is why ships often use a combination of line-of-sight observations and electronic aids, such as GPS and AIS, to navigate safely and efficiently. Moreover, line-of-sight is also important in the rules of the road at sea, where vessels within sight of one another must follow certain rules to avoid collisions.
