Nitrogen Oxides

Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are a group of highly reactive gases formed when fuel is burned at high temperatures in the presence of oxygen. In the maritime context, NOx emissions are primarily produced by marine engines and contribute to air pollution and acid rain. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set limits on NOx emissions from marine engines to reduce their impact on the environment and human health. The limits vary depending on the engine type, size, and date of installation, and are enforced through the issuance of International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) certificates. NOx emissions can be reduced through the use of low-NOx engines, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, and alternative fuels.
