Emissions

Emissions refer to the release of pollutants into the atmosphere from various sources, including ships. In the maritime context, emissions are primarily related to the burning of fossil fuels by ships, which releases pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) into the air. These emissions can have negative impacts on both human health and the environment, including contributing to climate change and ocean acidification. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented regulations to reduce emissions from ships, including the MARPOL Convention and the more recent IMO 2020 regulation, which requires ships to use fuel with a lower sulfur content.
