In the maritime context, nitrous oxide is used as a fuel additive in high-performance marine engines to increase power output. However, the use of nitrous oxide in marine engines is controversial due to its potential environmental impact, as it can contribute to the formation of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions.
