Nutrient Pollution

Nutrient pollution is a type of water pollution caused by excessive nutrient levels in water bodies. The primary sources of nutrient pollution are agricultural runoff, sewage treatment plants, and stormwater runoff. Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus are essential for plant growth, but when they are present in excess amounts, they can cause harmful algal blooms, oxygen depletion, and fish kills. Nutrient pollution can also lead to the formation of dead zones, areas in water bodies where oxygen levels are too low to support most marine life. Nutrient pollution is a significant environmental problem that can have severe impacts on aquatic ecosystems, human health, and the economy.
